Album Description Four years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Connected," The Foreign Exchange returns with their sophomore set, "Leave It All Behind." Consisting of singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, "Connected," was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ's such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica. "Leave It All Behind" finds The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay has since become a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. The duo's second full-length is a dark, multilayered affair that features Phonte showcasing his abilities as an exceptional lead and harmony vocalist, while Nicolay extends his musical palette to include sprinklings of jazz, downtempo, and house. The lush, Darien Brockington-assisted "Take Off the Blues" picks up where Connected's sleeper hit "Come Around" left off, while the complex polyrhythms and dreamy synthesizers of "Sweeter Than You" are described by Phonte as "swing jazz for the next century." Marc Mac (of legendary UK production team 4hero), also contributes a string arrangement to the duo's glorious cover of Stevie Wonder's oft-forgotten 1991 gem, "If She Breaks Your Heart." In addition to appearances from longtime FE affiliates Darien Brockington and Yahzarah, the album also features guest shots from producer/keyboardist Zo! and vocalist Muhsinah.

Take Off The Blues January 3, 2009 This is one of the most beautiful albums I've listened to in a long time. I have it on heavy rotation. I'd recommend it to any and everyone. Among all the dry, over-processed crap being fed to the masses by the entertainment industry (whether it be music or film) this stands out loud and proud from the pack and it's taken my blues away ... that's for sure.
::::Sighs of relief:::: January 2, 2009 You just don't know how good this album is unless you give it a thorough listen and let this good stuff sink into your souls! Phonte hits the spot every time! Very glad about my download purchase of this album. The songs are overwhelmed with good harmony, lyrics, off-beats that makes it different from those other artists that hardly ever put thought into their music!!!
Grooves for the Soul. December 15, 2008 I will be brief on this one because a couple of reviewers have pretty much expressed how I feel about this CD...I have to say I just discovered this CD last week after hearing "I Wanna Know" on Soulbounce.com. From the opening track of "Daykeeper" to the closing lullaby, "Leave it all behind," U will not be able to get this CD out of your mind and soul. IMO, this is the best CD of 2008. Don't miss out on this experience.
still good despite going in a complete different direction December 12, 2008 if you were a fan of the first foreign exchange album you wont be disapointed with the new album even though its an r&b album with hardly any rapping at all...it still has the same solid production that we have all come to expect from nicolay but you get to hear just how good phonte can sing...its good to have consecutive albums come out where you can hear the artists grow and do something different instead of doing the same thing over and over.
Phonte should be artist of the year. December 8, 2008 Bought this expecting a good hip-hop album. What I got was a good album, period. "And Justus For All" is a good hip-hop album so I expected Phonte to do his rap thing on LIAB, he just did HIS thing on LIAB. I listen to all sorts of music, so when the new Jazzanova cd dropped I downloaded it as soon as I saw it. There Phonte is again doing HIS thing. Which brings me back to LIAB, I would not consider these to be great songs. What it is is a great album. It flows. They worked their concept to death. Did I expect Nicolay to produce a 4Hero, Zero7 style album for FE, no but I am so glad that they left it all behind and put out an excellent album. This is the rare Hip-Hop/R&B of this generation that you will not feel the need to skip past tracks. Perfect for a drive, cleaning the house, a barbecue with friends, or just chilling with your significant other. It is that good.
